Windham Solid Waste - Hazardous Waste
Windham Solid Waste collects some hazardous waste products daily and others need to be brought to our Seasonal Rural Rover collections held in April, May, June and July; or our Annual Collection held on the first Saturday in November. Pre-Registration is required for the Annual Collection, but not required for the Rural Rovers.

Time to clean out the unwanted toxic waste in your basement, garage, bathroom and kitchen.
Read the label. If there are cautionary statements that read: WARNING, POISON, CAUTION, HARMFUL, CAUSTIC, FLAMMABLE, EXPLOSIVE, IRRITANT, or HAZARDOUS then the waste should be treated as hazardous waste.

The following wastes are accepted daily at the WSWMD Convenience Center on Old Ferry Rd, Brattleboro. There is no need to wait until the Annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event. These items are accepted at the annual and seasonal collections if bringing them to the WSWMD facility is not convenient.
- Mercury-containing devices
- Rechargeable batteries
- Uncontaminated used motor oil
- Oil filters
- Fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts
- Medical needles
- Oil-based paint, stains and polyurethane

Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection First Saturday in November Pre-Registration is Required

Plus, each year we pick a fifth site that has not had a collection in a while.
What to Bring:
From the Workbench - Oil paint, stains, varnishes, wood preservatives, rust proofers, paint strippers, paint thinners, adhesives, muriatic acid.
From the Garden - Insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, weed killers, moth balls.
From the Garage - Motor oil, fuel, gasoline, kerosene, antifreeze, engine degreaser, brake fluid, car wax, polishes, driveway sealer, roofing tar, swimming pool chemicals, lighter fluid.
From the House - Oven cleaners, floor and metal polishes, rug and upholstery cleaners, photo chemicals, chemistry sets, drain and toilet cleaners, spot removers, flea control products, moth balls.
If you have an item and you are not sure if it is hazardous, read the label. If there are cautionary statements that read: WARNING, POISON, CAUTION, HARMFUL, CAUSTIC, FLAMMABLE, EXPLOSIVE, IRRITANT, or HAZARDOUS then the waste should be treated as hazardous waste.
What NOT to Bring:
Latex paint (dry it out and throw away as trash),
Empty containers such as paint cans and cleaning bottles,
Non-household hazardous waste,
Radioactive wastes (e.g. smoke detectors),
Explosives,
Ammunition,
Asbestos,
Pharmaceuticals and medical waste. |

Commercial and Institutional Hazardous Waste is accepted only at the WSWMD Covenience Center during the Annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection. Otherwise, businesses and schools need to contact a private hazardous waste hauler to come directly to their site.

Some hazardous waste generated in the home is collected daily at the WSWMD Convenience Center. Other products are collected only on an annual basis or during special seasonal (Rural Rover) collections. Many of the items collected are free of charge.
